A major shake-up appears imminent at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). What had been circulating as rumors in recent days is now reportedly nearing confirmation. Former national team captain Aminul Islam Bulbul is likely to replace Faruque Ahmed as the BCB President.
Reliable sources from both the government and the BCB indicate that the matter has progressed beyond speculation and is heading toward a final decision. It is anticipated that current president Faruque Ahmed may announce his resignation at the upcoming board meeting, with Bulbul assuming the role on an interim basis the following day.
This move is being spearheaded by high-level government involvement. According to reports, the office of the Sports Advisor recently contacted Bulbul, a fact he himself has confirmed to a national daily.
In an emergency meeting held on Wednesday night, the Sports Advisor emphasized the need for leadership changes within the BCB. However, he clarified that directly removing Faruque Ahmed could violate the International Cricket Council (ICC) constitution. Therefore, a respectful transition through voluntary resignation is being planned.
Aminul Islam Bulbul’s potential appointment as BCB President will be temporary—lasting only until the next election. Currently, he is serving as the ICC’s Development Manager for the Asia region and also heads the High Performance and Training & Education divisions.
Bulbul’s existing contract with the ICC is set to expire next month, although a renewal for another year is reportedly close to being finalized. Given this context, assuming BCB leadership for a brief period is being considered in compliance with ICC regulations.
Notably, Bulbul, the first Bangladeshi to score a century in Test cricket, has long been active in international cricket administration. Respected and experienced, he is viewed by key stakeholders as a strong candidate to lead the BCB, even on an interim basis.
