The National Citizen Party (NCP) has expressed concern that the recently formed Women Reform Commission does not reflect inclusive representation of women from all sectors of society. This was stated in an official press release issued on Monday.
According to the statement, some of the commission’s reform proposals have sparked concern among various religious and social groups. The NCP emphasized that it is the state’s responsibility to formulate policies that respect the religious, social, and cultural integrity of all communities, while also honoring the beliefs and social values of every citizen.
The statement added that certain recommendations by the commission have created a confrontational dynamic between society and the state, and between religion and women’s rights. The NCP believes that issues causing public disagreement must be addressed through open, constructive dialogue involving all relevant and representative stakeholders.
Condemning the derogatory and disrespectful remarks made publicly against women during some protests against the reform proposals, the NCP strongly protested such behavior. The party recalled that women from all classes, professions, faiths, and ethnic backgrounds played pivotal roles in all major movements in Bangladesh, particularly the mass uprisings of July and August, which led to the end of prolonged fascist rule.
The NCP reaffirmed its commitment to women’s freedom, freedom of expression, and social struggle, pledging to uphold women’s dignity and rights. The National Citizen Party declared that it stands united with the women of the country to build a new and inclusive Bangladesh.
