Charges Filed Against Chinmoy Das and 37 Others in Chattogram Lawyer Murder Case

-

Police have submitted a charge sheet against 38 individuals, including Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in connection with the brutal murder of Chattogram-based lawyer Saiful Islam.

On Tuesday, July 1, Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali) Mahfuzur Rahman, the investigation officer in the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Chattogram Metropolitan Court. The submission was confirmed to the media by AC Mahfuzur Rahman himself.

The incident took place on November 26 last year, during a clash at the Chattogram court premises related to Chinmoy Das’s bail hearing. During the confrontation, lawyer Saiful Islam was hacked and beaten to death. Saiful’s father, Jamal Uddin, later filed a murder case naming 31 individuals. Five more cases followed, resulting in the arrest of 51 people. According to police, 21 of them were directly involved in the killing.

Court sources revealed that three of the accused—Chandan Das, Ripon Das, and Rajib Bhattacharya—gave confessional statements. In the confessions, it was stated that Ripon Das attacked with a cleaver and Chandan Das used a machete, while 15 to 20 others joined in the group assault that killed Saiful.

AC Mahfuzur Rahman stated that the attack was incited and led by Chinmoy Krishna Das, justifying his inclusion in the charge sheet.

Chinmoy Das is also facing a separate sedition case and is currently being held at the Chattogram Central Jail.
