Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, held a crucial meeting with Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the BNP, in London. The one-and-a-half-hour meeting concluded with both parties expressing satisfaction over the discussions.
Following the meeting, a joint press conference was held at the Dorchester Hotel in London at 3:30 PM Bangladesh time. The meeting itself began at 2:00 PM Bangladesh time. National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman and BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury briefed the media and read a joint statement on behalf of both sides.
In the statement, it was confirmed that the meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere. Tarique Rahman proposed that the national election be held before the upcoming Ramadan in 2026. He stated that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also believes that such timing would be appropriate.
In response, Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus shared that his government has already announced plans to hold the election within the first half of April next year. He added that if all necessary preparations are completed, elections could potentially be held even in the week before Ramadan begins in 2026. However, he emphasized that substantial progress must be made by then in terms of reforms and justice.
Tarique Rahman welcomed the Chief Advisor’s stance and extended his gratitude on behalf of the party. Dr. Yunus, in turn, thanked Tarique Rahman for what he described as a fruitful and productive discussion.
