Bangladeshi Agent of Philippines-Based Online Gambling Site ‘Banglawin’ Arrested in Jhenaidah

-

A Bangladeshi national named Mehedi Hasan has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the Detective Branch (DB) police in connection with illegal online gambling activities. He was detained late Sunday night from Muraridah village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Imran Zakaria, Mehedi Hasan was working as a local agent for ‘Banglawin’, an online gambling platform allegedly operated out of the Philippines. His role involved recruiting regional agents and facilitating financial transactions through mobile banking services and other digital payment channels, which encouraged online betting and gambling across the country.

Law enforcement officials, acting on confidential intelligence, conducted a raid and apprehended Mehedi Hasan. A laptop and mobile phone, believed to be used for gambling-related operations, were seized during the arrest. A case has been officially filed under relevant sections of Bangladesh’s cyber crime and anti-gambling laws.

This arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown by Bangladeshi authorities against illegal online gambling networks that are being operated remotely and drawing participants through social media and mobile apps.

Online gambling platforms like Banglawin are increasingly targeting users in South Asia by using local agents and mobile payment systems. Authorities warn that such operations pose significant financial and social threats, especially to the youth.
