After four months of medical treatment and rest in London, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is expected to return to Bangladesh on May 5, subject to final medical clearance and logistical readiness. According to Dr. A. Z. M. Zahid Hossain, a member of the party’s standing committee, all arrangements are being made to bring her back on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines regular flight under special care.
“Madam’s physical condition is significantly better now,” Dr. Zahid Hossain said. “If everything goes according to plan and doctors give the green signal, she will return home on May 5.” While full air ambulance facilities were not feasible, her medical team and close aides in London are working to ensure maximum in-flight support and post-arrival care.
Sources within the BNP confirmed that Tarique Rahman, the party’s acting chairman, is personally overseeing the entire process from London, maintaining regular contact with medical professionals and senior party leaders in Bangladesh.
Begum Khaleda Zia, who suffers from chronic conditions including liver complications, kidney issues, heart disease, and diabetes, traveled to the UK late last year for advanced treatment. During her stay, she underwent several specialized medical tests and received continued care from a London-based team.
BNP has also announced that upon her return, Khaleda Zia will be kept under close observation at her Gulshan residence ‘Firoza’, where necessary medical arrangements are being made in coordination with both local and international doctors.
The news of her impending return has sparked enthusiasm among BNP leaders and grassroots activists. Reports indicate that party supporters from Dhaka and nearby districts are preparing to welcome her near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and her residence. However, BNP has urged all supporters to remain cautious and maintain health guidelines considering her fragile condition.
Party officials have also emphasized that this is a medical return, not a political event, and discouraged any form of mass gathering or political programs around her arrival.
If everything proceeds smoothly, May 5 could mark a significant moment for the BNP, as their long-ailing leader touches down on Bangladeshi soil again—potentially opening a new chapter in the party’s ongoing journey.
