Today (April 28), a sudden storm accompanied by heavy hail struck Jashore town and its surrounding areas around noon. According to reports gathered by Gramer Kagoj from various locations, the intense hailstorm caused severe damage to growing crops and fruits.
Our Barinagar correspondent reported that in Rasulpur, Beneyali, Hapania Laukhali, and Bhagolpur villages under Haibatpur Union of Sadar Upazila, heavy hail accompanied the storm. Hazrat Ali, a resident of Rasulpur village, said that large hailstones damaged newly sprouted paddy along with vegetables like pointed gourd (potol), string beans (shim), hyacinth bean (barboti), Malabar spinach (pui shak), and also caused significant damage to mango and litchi orchards.
Staff reporter Mizanur Rahman from Churamankati informed that around 3 PM, sudden hail and strong winds devastated areas under Churamankati, Haibatpur, and Kashimpur unions. The worst damage was reported in IRRI rice fields and pointed gourd farms. Additionally, tin-roofed houses were punctured by the hailstones.
Abdus Sattar of Haibatpur Union said that his entire tin roof was riddled with holes due to the hailstorm.
Habib, a farmer from Dogachhia village, shared that he expected 30 maunds of paddy per bigha but fears now it will be difficult to harvest even 15 maunds. Delwar Hossain, a pointed gourd farmer from Ahsannagar village, reported that the hailstorm broke the tips of the potol plants and destroyed the flower buds.
Many fields in the region are still filled with standing paddy crops, leaving farmers devastated. Even a few minutes of hail and storm were enough to plunge numerous farming families into despair.
Farid Hossain, Gramer Kagoj’s correspondent from Khajura, also confirmed extensive hailstorm damage in various parts of the area, including Lebutala, Dolenagar, Sharshunadah, and Enayetpur
