Russia Becomes First Country to Recognize Taliban Government

-

Four years after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, Russia has officially recognized the Taliban-led government in Kabul. With this move, Russia has become the first country to grant formal recognition to the Taliban administration.

Previously, countries like China, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan had appointed ambassadors to Kabul but refrained from officially recognizing the Taliban government. Thus, Russia remains the only nation to formally acknowledge the regime during the Taliban’s four-year rule.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi praised Russia’s decision as a “bold step.” He stated, “This recognition marks a new chapter of mutual respect, constructive partnership, and positive relations. It could serve as a precedent for other nations.”

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it believes the formal recognition of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” will foster productive bilateral cooperation across various sectors. The ministry added that Russia sees potential for trade and economic collaboration in energy, transport, agriculture, and infrastructure. It also pledged support to Afghanistan in combating terrorism and drug trafficking.

The recognition was formally conveyed on Thursday during a meeting in Kabul between Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov and Afghan Foreign Minister Muttaqi. During the meeting, Zhirnov officially informed the Afghan side of the Russian government’s decision.

It is worth noting that the U.S. completed its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan at the end of August 2021. On August 14, the Taliban took control of Kabul, and shortly afterward, the final U.S. C-17 aircraft departed, marking the end of America’s longest war and a massive evacuation effort.
